Artist's Memories Create Extraordinary Soaps

(Fanwood, NJ) - December 7, 1999 - Gumdrops, long walks on the beach, a champagne glass filled on New Year's eve. The sparkle of stained glass in the windows of church on Sunday. These are some of the things Ellen Cagnassola remembers. So powerful and compelling are the Fanwood, New Jersey soap artist's memories, that she created a line of top selling soap products fashioned after them.

"I wanted to take something ordinary, like a bar of soap, and give it a personality. Let it tell a story. The things that I have most enjoyed in life seemed like the perfect subject for my art," says Cagnassola.

"We all have special memories. Some of my fondest are of childhood. I remember the look of gumdrops sitting in the bowl, their powdery sugar just begging me to take one. So I created Sweet Drops®, which are tiny guest soaps that look exactly like gumdrops. I've been told more than once how delicious they look," laughs Cagnassola.

Since opening her business, aptly named Sweet Soaps, in July of this year, Cagnassola's soap products have been earning rave reviews. Her unique creations are available in many stores throughout New Jersey as well as at the Marriott Hotel at Newark International Airport.

"The feedback and interest in my products has been phenomenal," she says. "I created Jewel Soaps® for the holidays and packaged them in satin jewelry pouches. They were a huge hit with local area jewelers. For New Year's eve I designed Millennium Bath Cocktails® which are colorful scented bath salts topped off with glycerin soap, all packaged in a champagne glass!"

Creating products that excite and delight is Cagnassola's aim. Some of her other original creations include, Boardwalk Salt Water Soaps® and Stained Glass Soap® a pretty blend of square shaped colors that have the appearance of pieces of stained glass art.

"Creating art with soap is a wonderful way for me to express my talent," says Cagnassola. "I'm enjoying developing new products and packaging that is reflective of my heart and soul. While I have created soap from my own cherished memories, I have also worked with others to create products that tell their unique life stories. Soap is a happy medium to work with. I'm thrilled that so many people have shown an interest in using our products."
